Top Wahoo Fishing destinations
Wahoo inhabit subtropical and tropical seas, especially coastal waters. It is caught in the United States (especially Florida and the Gulf of Mexico), the Bahamas, Hawaii, Australia, the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Mauritius, Madagascar, etc.
How to fish Wahoo
Wahoo are fished mainly by trolling with artificial lures such as diving Rapala, Halco, skirted baits.... They are fast fish and like fast trolling lures (6 to 10 knots). Wahoo are fished inshore, near the drop-offs.
If you have the luxury of a GPS or bottom mapping software on your boat, you should look for areas on the ocean bottom where the fishing surface is jagged and uneven, with lots of rock formations, etc.
Since the wahoo has sharp teeth, you must be prepared for this. To do this, rig your line with a line or wire leader to be on the safe side, about 400 to 500 pounds in weight. In general, they are attracted to anything shiny, so you can fish for them with something as simple as a diving Rapala or similar lures.
Can you eat Wahoo?
Wahoo, as you might guess from their Hawaiian name 'Ono' meaning "delicious", are extremely good to eat. They have a sweet taste and are cooked until perfectly flaky. For eating fish, there is nothing better than wahoo. However, like tuna, they can contain high levels of mercury, so don't eat them too soon.
Wahoo can be grilled, fried or baked in many ways. The best wahoo recipes can be found on the web. Our top 3 wahoo recipes are
