Between May and September you normally troll offshore because you can fish for Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Wahoo, Albacore, Tuna, Skipjack and other pelagics. The rest of the year we prefer bottom fishing to catch all kinds of bottom fish such as Bocinegro (Snapper), Pagel, Cabracho, Sama, Serviola - or Medregal as it is called in the Canary Islands -, Abae, etcetera. On the way to the fishing area we always take the opportunity to do some light trolling because there can always be a bite of wahoo, tuna or albacore.
Fishing in Tenerife is usually done at anchor, but sometimes you can also drift fish. Fishing in Tenerife is characterized by a very diverse variety of species: the most common species are Sargo, Mojarra, Cabrillas (Serranos) and Brecas, followed by Bocinegro, Sama, Sama Roquera, Chopas and several species of Morena. In deeper waters you can catch Breca, Bocinegro (Pargo), Sama, Rascacio (Cabracho) and larger predators such as Grouper, Abade or Cherna.
Coastal trolling is also practiced with light tackle. With artificial lures you can fish for Bonitos (Sierra), Barracuda, Anjova (silverside), Skipjack and wahoo. At greater depths and if possible with natural bait, you can catch good fish such as Sama, Dentex or Amberjack (Medregal).
Deep-sea fishing in Tenerife is practiced mainly during the summer months, which is when we are visited by billfish such as Blue Marlin, White Marlin and different types of Tuna (Yellowfin Tuna or Yellowfin Tuna, Bigeye Tuna, Barrilote, etc). The Lampuga and the Peto are also fished with this modality.
Fishing in Tenerife is also very effective practicing the jigging technique. On rocky bottoms, viriles and ridges, jigs are dropped at depths of 70 m to 150 m to look for large Amberjack, Samas, Dentex and Grouper. With smaller lures, you can also catch Snapper, Barracuda and Sierra, among others. There are very interesting areas in Los Gigantes in the west of the island.
Blue Marlin: The Blue Marlin is the king of kings and every sport fishing enthusiast dreams of catching it at least once in his life. Weighing more than 1000 pounds (500 kg more or less), it is characterized by its beak, its blue tones and its pointed dorsal fin. Fishing in Tenerife for Blue Marlin is practiced by trolling with Octopus type lures that are dragged behind the Boat. These animals are usually found in waters with considerable depths, i.e. from 500 m onwards. This does not mean that they are not found closer to the coast, because it would not be the first time that a Marlin bites just out of the harbor in only 70 m.
The best time for fishing in Tenerife for this species is from June to October.
White Marlin: The White Marlin is the little brother that is quickly recognized by its bright light blue stripes and its dorsal fin more rounded than that of the blue marlin. Its average weight is between 20 and 30 kg approximately. It tends to move in small groups of several individuals in waters deeper than 100 m. The white marlin feeds on a wide variety of fish, cephalopods and crustaceans. The best time for White Marlin Fishing in Tenerife is from June to October.
Amberjack: From November to January the big Amberjack (30 - 50 kg) (or Medregales as they are called in the Canary Islands) take over from the billfishes at the top of the trophic pyramid. During these months you can fish in optimal conditions with live bait with a calmer sea and with temperatures between 23 and 25°C. However, for fishing with live bait you must have a skipper who masters this technique to perfection. As a general rule, Squid, Bonito or Barracuda are used (these can be up to 1 meter long).
Big Eye Tuna: The Thunnus Obesus is found in temperate waters and tropical seas, but not in the Mediterranean Sea. They grow up to two and a half meters long and weigh almost 200 kg. It has large, well-developed eyes for seeing at high depths where visibility is poor. It is a born fighter and can endure fights lasting several hours. In the Canary Islands it is mostly fished trolling with artificial lures and sometimes with natural bait.
Fishing in Tenerife for bigeye tuna and other tuna such as bluefin tuna and albacore is more abundant during the months of February, March and April.
Grouper: the Grouper is one of the most prized trophies among fishing enthusiasts for its delicious meat and because it is not caught every day. It is a sedentary species with large eyes and prominent jaw that can be found all year round while fishing in Tenerife. We find it in rocky areas where it camouflages well with its brown color and white spots. The best way for Fishing in Tenerife for Grouper is using natural bait (Squid, Mackerel, Choco...) drifting or trolling. It can also be fished jigging. Once it has bitten it is important to try to "lift" it from the bottom of the sea because if you have the slightest chance, it will get into a hole and getting it out of there is practically impossible.
GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Tenerife is located slightly north of the Tropic of Cancer, between Gran Canaria and La Palma. With a triangular shape, this island is the largest of the whole archipelago and covers an area of 2,033 km2.
It has an abrupt island orography and its variety of climates result in a territory of multiple landscapes and shapes, from the Teide National Park with its amalgam of colors resulting from the successive volcanic eruptions, to the Teide Cliffs. The area has a variety of landscapes and forms, from the Teide National Park with its amalgam of colors resulting from successive volcanic eruptions, to the Cliffs of Los Gigantes with its vertical walls, through semi-desert areas with drought-resistant plants in the south, or environments of a purely volcanic nature such as the Malpaís de Güímar.
It also has natural beaches such as El Médano, protected areas such as Montaña Roja and Montaña Pelada, valleys with tropical and subtropical crops, laurisilva forests in the Anaga and Teno massifs with deep and steep ravines and extensive pine forests above this last vegetation formation.
WEATHER
Fishing in Tenerife has a wonderful climate all year round. The uniqueness of the island in terms of climate is that Starting from this island has many geographical distinction across the island, the weather also varies throughout a given day. If you are sunbathing on one of the beaches on the south coast during the winter, the next day you can go hiking in the snow clad Teide.
The summer season begins with June and extends until September, with higher temperatures ranging from 27 to 24 degrees Celsius. The water temperature however does not soar like that of the Mediterranean Sea making it suitable for a lot of varieties of sport fishing.
The winter season extends from December to February among which January is the coldest.
Autumn and winter: At this time of the year, the best technique for fishing in Tenerife is bottom fishing. Fishing with natural bait we fish all kinds of rockfish, big skate and mid-water: Sierra (the Canarian name for Atlantic Bonito, in Latin Sarda Sarda). With live bait (Mackerel, Choco or Squid for example) you can fish Medregal (Serviola), Sama.
In winter you can catch Bluefin tuna, Big eye tuna and Albacore. Fishing in Tenerife for these species is trolling with big lures or natural bait. You can also drift fish for Tuna with natural bait.
Spring and summer: Fishing in Tenerife from spring onwards is abundant. During this time a warmer water current arrives from the south to the Canary Islands. This current arrives first to La Gomera and then reaches the other islands of the archipelago. This current manages to attract abundant nutrients for small fish such as mackerel, sardines, sardines, sardines, etc.. In turn, these small fish are the preferred food for wahoo, albacore, skipjack tuna, bonito, white marlin and especially blue marlin.
The "Picudos" visit Tenerife from June to October, although the best months for Marlin Fishing in Tenerife are July and August.
Fishing in Tenerife during this time of the year is very attractive since almost all the Boats are trolling: at a speed of about 6 - 8 knots all kinds of artificial lures such as octopus or squid made of rubber or feather are dragged. Fishing is done on the surface and the lures usually come out of the water, creating a bubble trail that attracts predators even more. The vast majority of Anglers practice responsible fishing: once they have enjoyed fighting an animal that can weigh more than 1,000 pounds (almost 500 kg), it is released again safe and sound.
Apart from fishing in Tenerife, you can also enjoy the area by biking, mountain biking, snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, hiking, and much more.
