Caproig (scorpionfish): The caproig, redfish, scorpionfish or scorpionfish, is a red fish covered with spines. It usually weighs between 1.5 and 2 kilograms but we can find specimens of 3 kilograms. They usually bury themselves in the sand or linger in rocky crevices and at night they come out to eat. They feed on small fish and crustaceans. They molt every two weeks. It is a beautiful fish very desired by the Anglers of the Balearic Islands. Fishing in Mallorca for this species can be done practically all year round with worm, sardine or squid in the bottom mode.
Llampuga: The fish also called Dorado, as it is popularly known, is one of the most beautiful fish that can be found while fishing in Mallorca in salt waters. Of a very agile nature, they offer a very passionate game for the practice of sport fishing. It has a bright appearance, with blue, yellow or green tones, they come out of the water, but when they notice the hook they try to dive quickly. Some of the specimens of this species even practice what in the Anglo-Saxon world is called Tail walking (which is an action more typical of dolphins that consists of getting out of the water on their back and using their tail to propel themselves backwards).
They are fighters, they exhaust all their strength before letting themselves be caught. For all these reasons, they are among the first positions in the Fishing lists in Mallorca. We can distinguish an adult male llampuga from the female by its raised forehead, while the female's is more rounded.
As for its weight, it varies between 7 and 40 kg in adult specimens. The best months for Fishing in Majorca are September and October. This voracious species is caught mainly by trolling with small lures and feathers. A good fighter, it usually jumps during the fight.
Bluefin tuna: The bluefin tuna(Thunnus Thynnus) or also known as bluefin tuna or bighead tuna, is a fish of the Scombridae family. It is a species that can weigh around 600 kilograms, which makes it one of the most prized species by Anglers.
Mallorca and the Balearic Islands are one of the most important spawning grounds for this "king of the seas". Although the best time to catch tuna is the summer, when the waters are warm, bluefin tuna can be caught all year round in the waters of Alcudia. Like the tuna in the Balearic Islands it does not usually hunt in shallow waters as it feeds on jacks at depths below 10 meters.
For this reason there are not many Anglers in Mallorca who spin fish for tuna. Fishing in Mallorca is ideal for trolling for tuna with the Boat running and going at a speed of 7-10 knots, dragging lures behind the Boat in the hope that they will be seen by the tuna.
Trolling is fishing by going at high speed dragging lures so that the tuna will see it. Although for fishing big tuna, the best way is to troll, throwing sardines or mackerel into the water to attract the tuna (with the Boat stopped). With the sardine and mackerel trail the tuna is attracted and within this trail the baited hooks are presented with the rods that are available, usually between 2 and 3 rods, which makes it a more blind fishing.
Albacore: Albacore, Albacore or White Tuna (Thunnus alalunga) usually has a length of up to 140 cm and can weigh up to 60 kg. It differs from bluefin tuna because it has a larger pectoral fin than the common tuna and dark oblique stripes on both sides of the dorsal area. It usually lives in the high seas. The albacore tuna is a prized food, also appreciated by sport Anglers. Between May and August you can enjoy trolling for albacore in Mallorca.
Swordfish: Swordfish is a migratory predator characterized by its long, flat beak (sword-like). In their adult stage they lose all their teeth and scales. They can weigh up to 540 kilograms and can reach a length of 4.3 meters. It is sometimes called "Emperor", although this name also refers to a very different species: Luvarus imperialis. This confusion is caused by the similarity of the fillet meat of both species. The winter months are the best time to catch swordfish. It is a rare fish, and fishing for it is not easy.
Fishing in Mallorca in spring is at the end of May, when species such as bluefin tuna, albacore (albacore), swordfish, imperial marlin and dorado (llampuga) arrive. The bluefin tuna passes mainly through the Ibiza channel, continues its way through the Gulf of Valencia, passes through the Ebro Delta, to spawn in the Balearic Islands, the Gulf of Leon and other areas. They are albacore of 10kg - 20kg and tuna of 15kg to 50kg. They are usually fished by trolling. Sometimes you can also catch some imperial marlin, but this is sporadic.
During the months of May to August, the albacore fishes a route through the south of the Balearic Islands. In May, June the schools move in areas called the "S" and the "Torre", located south of the island of Mallorca. In June, July the albacore move more towards the south east in areas such as "Ses Mamelles". At the end of July and in August they are already off Menorca. After spawning in the waters between Formentera and Mallorca towards the end of June, the best time to catch Bluefin Tuna on the brumeo begins. August and September are the best months for Giant Bluefin Tuna and Giant Swordfish (up to 300kg). Fishing in Majorca in summer you can fish mainly in brumeo and the best areas are between Majorca and Ibiza, north of Cape Formenter or also an area located east of Porto Colom and Porto Cristo.
Fishing in Mallorca when autumn arrives you can also practice light trolling and spinning for small tuna and dolphinfish (between 1 and 10kg). September, October are very good for fishing for llampuga (also called Dorado). Fishing is trolling and it is necessary to move away from the coast. The small Bluefin tuna, from 1 to 2 kilos, which is usually biting also at this time of the year, should be caught and released as it is a protected species.
Fishing in Mallorca during the winter months, like all year round, we can do bottom fishing. With this Fishing we will find a great variety of species such as "CapRoig", sea bream, conger eel and brotola among others. Fishing for squid is also possible.
Fishing in Mallorca is fruitful all year round. Fishing can be done by jigging (dentex, amberjack, grouper, roosterfish), although it is necessary to invest many hours.
Fishing can also be practiced bottom fishing and deep sea fishing. The fishing grounds are located on the edges of the continental shelf known in Mallorca as "Fonera". Bottom fishing is done using baits such as worm, squid, cuttlefish and sardine, you can fish bream, brotola, bream, bream, scorpion fish or as the islanders call it: Caproig, horse mackerel, mackerel, grouper, conger eel, wreckfish.
In Alcudia you can fish bluefin tuna all year round. A few miles from the coast is the "canto", where the seabed drops to 1000m. When fishing in Mallorca you have to consider the sea currents that come from the Gulf of Leon collide with this ridge generating very nutritious vertical currents for all kinds of small fish such as sardines and especially horse mackerel.
Tuna and also swordfish live permanently in this area and feed mainly on horse mackerel. In this area the Fishing in Mallorca is very punished by the storms, although the days that the weather gives a respite, we can enjoy authentic festivals in the waters of Alcudia.
Apart from fishing in Mallorca, you can also enjoy the area by biking or mountain biking, wine tasting in the nearby wineries, snorkeling or scuba diving, sailing, walking and hiking, and much much more.
Discover the local customs and food in the hundreds of bars and restaurants in the area.
Mallorca is the largest island of the Balearic archipelago, which forms a single-province autonomous community, the easternmost in Spain. Its capital, and also that of the autonomous community, is Palma de Mallorca. This island is a perfect place for nature lovers, it has white sandy beaches, green landscapes, the Tramuntana mountain range, stone caves, etc. For a trip around the island you can take the Sóller train. Other options with cycling, hiking or Fishing in Majorca.
To get to Mallorca you can go by plane and land at the airport of Palma de Mallorca which is located 8 km east of Palma, the capital of Mallorca. Within the island you can use the well connected railroad, metro or bus services.
Mallorca has 3,640.11 km², making it the largest island in Spain and 862,397 inhabitants according to the 2009 census (population density: 257.85 inhabitants/km²). Mallorca, as well as the other islands of the Balearic archipelago, has rocky seabeds rich in fauna and flora. One of the best examples is the archipelago of Cabrera, now declared a National Maritime Terrestrial Park, which has a great natural value. Throughout history it has been very isolated from human activity and its coastline and seabed have remained almost unchanged to the present day. The rocky bottoms of Fishing in Mallorca are inhabited by grouper, scorpion fish, scorpion fish (cap roig), conger eel, moray eels etc.. We will also come across sea bass, gilthead sea bream, dentex... The large 1000 meter depths are already about 6 miles off the south east coast of Mallorca. This means that in 20 minutes you can be fishing offshore. The same happens in the north of the island, in front of Alcudia, where we find "el canto" a few miles from the coast.
