Bluefin trevally fishing
The bluefin trevally (Caranx melampygus) is the first cousin of the giant trevally (GT) and also of the jack mackerel. It lives in tropical waters of the Indian and Pacific Ocean.
It is easily recognized by its electric blue fins and the blue, black and brown spots on its sides. They can weigh up to 40 kg and measure up to one meter in length.
The Bluefin trevally is a powerful fighter and is fished with fly, natural bait, spinning, popping and jigging. For sport fishing, it is undoubtedly one of the most emblematic species in the Indo-Pacific region.
Young specimens live in shallow areas such as reefs, bays and mouths. Here they feed on a wide range of small fish, cephalopods and sometimes also crustaceans. Adult trevally may also frequent shallow waters, but usually prefer deeper reefs, slopes and ridges up to 180 meters deep.
