Fishing in Algarve

The Algarve is a great place for big game fishing. Madeira and the Azores are five-star destinations for this extreme Fishing, but let's not forget that billfish and tuna also visit the Algarve waters. Located 45 nautical miles from Portimão (Algarve), the Picos Herminios are the best place for fishing Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Swordfish, Skipjack, Red Tuna and sharks such as Blue Shark (Tintorera), Hammerhead Shark, Mako...

Compared to the islands, Anglers say that there are more Marlin around the islands, but the Marlin of Picos have a much higher average weight. The seabed rises from about 1000 meters deep to only 260 meters creating huge currents towards the surface concentrating a lot of fish. The shallows have a surface area of about 4 nautical miles.

But, many times you don't have to look that far and you can do deep sea fishing about 12-14 miles offshore. In fact Fishing charters prefer these closer fishing areas for white marlin fishing in late July, August, September and early October.

Bottom fishing (chambel) or trolling is also available. Fishing bottom fishing with bait (cuttlefish, squid, sardine, worm...) you can catch sea bream, sea bass, mackerel, conger eel, sole, etc. We can also be surprised by catches of Sama, Denton, Amberjack or Corvina if we fish with live bait.

The Marlin Fishing Season starts towards the end of June when the sea begins to warm up. Billfish stay until the end of October and White Marlin stay until November. The best time to fish for Bluefin Tuna is from April to August. Other Species to catch in these Lusitanian waters are Albacore, Amberjack, Blue Marlin, Imperial Marlin, Bonito and Amberjack. Fishing tournaments are organized every summer in ports such as Vilamoura, Albufeira, Portimão and Tavira.

Fishing and bait fishing are available all year round.

Fishing in Algarve requires a fishing license. Remember that Fishing charters usually include the cost of the license in the Price of the Fishing trip. But there are others that charge extra. The good news is that it does not usually cost more than 5€.

Depending on the Boat and the Duration of your Fishing trip, you will pay more or less for the trip. The Price for a 4 hours fishing trip in Algarve is 580€. An 8 hour Fishing trip will cost you between 1000€ and 1800€, depending on whether you want to go on an inshore fishing trip or a deep sea fishing trip.

What is included in the Price?

The Price usually includes the Captain, fishing tackle, fuel, bait and lures and licenses. In each ad we indicate if drinks and food are Included.

Once the Booking is made, the Captain will contact you to arrange the meeting point and the time of departure. We also recommend that you contact the Captain a couple of days before the trip to confirm the weather forecast.
