The Ebro river rises in Fontibre (Cantabria). It first flows through the rocky landscape of Burgos. In Navarra, La Rioja and Aragon, the Ebro becomes wider and wider. The level of the Ebro rises especially in spring when numerous tributaries discharge the waters produced by the thaw in the Pinineo. Along the Ebro, the Mequinenza, Ribarroja and Flix reservoirs regulate the lower course of the river. Downstream, the Ebro crosses Asco, Mora, Miravet and its medieval fortification, Tortosa, Amposta, flowing into the Mediterranean after passing Deltebre.
Catfish are the largest fish in the Ebro River. Fishing for these huge predators requires strong fishing tackle. Anglers regularly catch catfish weighing 50kg+ and the biggest ones exceed 100kg. In the reservoirs of Mequinenza and Ribarroja they are mostly caught with pellets and other carp bait. In the river, the Fishing Guides use rather live bait such as eel for example. Although they eat all day long, the best time to fish for catfish is around sunset. This is when they are most active.
While summer is most popular for catfish fishing, European campers prefer winter for carpfishing. The Ebro has a large population of small, hard-fighting carp. The Mequinenza and Caspe reservoirs have carp in excess of 20kg. Simple rigs work very well as many carp in the Ebro have never seen a hook in their life. Although boilies work, we recommend the usual baits: corn, bread, potato, snail, earthworm, etc...
Fishing for pikeperch has seen an increase in popularity due to the large specimens that have been caught in recent years. The biggest pike-perch (up to 10kg) are caught mainly in winter (December, January, February). They are fished with natural or artificial bait (drop shot rigged vinyls work very well).
Another predator that is very popular among sport fishing lovers is the black bass. Fishing is also done with live bait and artificial bait. Spinning and fly fishing is done with streamers and soft baits. Poppers, stick baits and other surface lures also work well. The largest bass exceed 60cm.
Burgos, Zaragoza, Asco, Mora, Miravet, Tortosa, Amposta.
