Fishing in Sweden

The most popular sport fishing species in Sweden are salmon, brown trout, pike, pike-perch and cod.

The west coast offers good deep-sea fishing. The main species caught in the North Sea are cod, pollock and sea trout.

On the east coast, the brackish waters of the Baltic Sea are a good place to fish for pike and sea trout between the islands. In deeper waters, such as those around Hanöbukten and around Simrishamn in southern Sweden, large salmon are trolled with artificial lures or natural bait. Vertical jigging can also give good results when fishing for this species.

In southern Sweden, flat lakes abound, stocked mainly with pike, pike-perch and perch.

Further north, the Swedish territory is more rugged. Surrounded by hills and lush forests, its lakes teem with large pike, perch, pike-perch and trout.

In the Arctic Circle you can enjoy your fly fishing adventure on the Lainio and Torne rivers in Swedish Lapland. This is undoubtedly a world-class destination for salmon, Arctic char, grayling and brown trout.

Spring and autumn, when the waters are cooler, are the best times to fish for pike in Sweden. During the warmer summer months, pike tend to stay in deeper water during the day and are active early in the morning and towards dusk. However, summer is a good time to fish for perch and pike perch.

The Baltic salmon season starts in summer and Atlantic salmon can be caught during autumn and winter.

In Lapland, towards the end of May, the frozen rivers and lakes break up, sending huge amounts of ice water and ice downstream. Summer is the best time to fish for salmon in the Lainio and Torne rivers.
