Spain has a myriad of Fishing destinations. Small rivers run through the Pyrenees, the Cantabrian Mountains, the Iberian System and central Spain. These rivers with cold water are the habitat of trout.
Spain has a number of large rivers such as the Tajo, the Ebro, the Guadiana, the Duero, the Guadalquivir, the Júcar, the Segura, the Turia and the Miño. The most common Species in these rivers are carp, barbel, black bass, pike-perch, pike and catfish.
Mequinenza is one of the best known catfish fishing sites in the world. Throughout the year there is a frenetic activity in the Mequinenza reservoir to fish for these predators that can reach a length of more than 2 meters. Fishing is done with natural bait and increasingly with pellets.
The Riba Roja and Flix reservoirs are also famous for their huge catfish.
The Canary Islands are a favorite destination for many sport fishing enthusiasts looking for action.
With depths of up to 3000 meters, the islands of La Graciosa, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma are the preferred habitat of a great variety of migratory fish as well as sedentary species.
Amberjack, scorpionfish and bluefish can be fished all year round. March, April and May are the best months for tuna fishing in the Canary Islands. This does not mean that the rest of the year tuna are not caught in the islands. Barrilote, bluefin tuna and albacore are fished all year round. Yellowfin tuna is usually caught more during the summer months.
Summer is also the best time to fish for blue marlin and white marlin.
Only 14 km separate the Iberian Peninsula from the African continent, but all tuna that want to go from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean have to pass through the Strait of Gibraltar. Starting from April to October the tuna fishing is usually good here.
By jigging, bottom fishing (chambel) or spinning you can fish for other very interesting species such as sea bream, amberjack, dentex and amberjack, grouper, etc.
Apart from being a fabulous tourist destination, the Balearic Islands are also an excellent place for sport fishing. The waters of Menorca, Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera are known for their bluefin tuna and albacore fishing.
Their rocky bottom hides species such as scorpion fish, grouper, sea bream, dentex and amberjack.
On the northern coast of Spain, the Bay of Biscay and the Atlantic Ocean bathe the coasts of the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia. All year round (weather permitting) you can fish for sea bream and sea bass. During the summer months you can also fish for bluefin tuna or albacore (white tuna) in the open sea.
The 450 kilometers that separate Vinaros from Torrevieja are an ideal destination for bluefin tuna fishing in summer. Especially during the months of May and June, Valencia, Gandia, Denia and Javea become the European epicenter for tuna fishing.
The rest of the year it is an ideal place for coastal fishing, both for trolling, spinning, jigging and bottom fishing.
The Ebro Delta is famous for its inshore fishing. It is a favorite destination for Anglers looking to fish for bluefish and leerfish by spinning or trolling. These waters south of Tarragona are also a well-known destination for tuna fishing by spinning and trolling.
Apart from fishing in Spain, you can also enjoy cycling or mountain biking, wine tasting in the wineries of Rioja, Penedés, Ribera del Duero (and a long etcetera), snorkeling or scuba diving, sailing, walks and hiking through the extensive network of "Grandes Recorridos" (G.R.), and much more.
Discover local customs and food in the country's millions of bars and restaurants.
There are huge national parks such as Doñana, the Picos de Europa, the Pyrenees, the Ebro Delta, the Teide in Tenerife ...
Visit the theme parks such as Port Aventura in Salou, Tarragona.
Fishing in Spain requires a fishing license. Fishing licenses are purchased from the local administrations of the respective communities. For certain rivers or marshes there are local fishing licenses. To be able to fish in the Mequinenza reservoir for example, a local fishing license is also required.
Remember that Fishing charters usually already have a collective fishing license so you do not need to buy one if you are going to hire a Boat.
