Black River, Mauritius Island
Every year several prestigious Big Game Fishing tournaments are held in Mauritius. The best skippers in the world come to the island to compete for the Marlin World Cup, a big game fishing competition usually organized in December. The famous MarlinMag magazine lists Mauritius as one of the best places to catch a grander and ranks the island on a par with Cape Verde, Azores, Madeira, Brazil and Hawaii.
The best time for blue marlin fishing is from December to March. Other billfish such as sailfish and spearfish are also caught during these months. Black marlin, however, are caught mainly during the months of May through November.
For jigging lovers, Mauritius has it all: great depths, rocky areas, currents and reefs. And all this not far from the coast! They are the favorite territory for dogtooth tuna, wahoo, yellowfin tuna, grouper, snapper, among others.
On the island there are inexpensive Fishing charters and boats that make half day or full day trips. There are also longer expeditions to the Soudan Bank, which is located about 100 nautical miles northeast of Mauritius.
Surface fishing for dorado, yellowfin tuna and the super predator the GT - Giant Trevally - with big poppers and walkers. The violent surface strikes leave no Angler indifferent.
About 100 nautical miles northeast of Mauritius lies the Soudan Bass. It is a paradise for sport fishing of more than 100 km2 practically untouched. The average depth is around 50m and there are places with as little as 15 meters of water. The Soudan Bank is home to marlin, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, dogtooth tuna, grouper, giant trevally...
Fishing charters make expeditions from Mauritius. Knowing that it takes 15 hours to go and 15 hours to return, it is interesting to stay and fish for several days. Fishing charter fishing in the Soudan Bank is not cheap, but you will never forget it!
Fishing in Mauritius is good all year round. It is true that each Species has its best months, but that doesn't mean that outside this peak you can't find them.
Blue Marlin, Sailfish, Spearfish: December to March
Black Marlin: May to November
Yellowfin Tuna: all year round, but the best months are March, April and May.
Peto and Dogtooth Tuna: all year round, but the best months are November through March.
Giant Trevally: GT is caught mainly from December to February.
Apart from Fishing, all kinds of water sports are practiced on the island. You can go surfing in the bay of Tamarin or Morne, as well as rent a yacht, play golf or go horseback riding. The Gorges National Park, on the Black Riviera, offers hikers 50 kilometers of marked trails. Its 150 varieties of plants will delight nature lovers.
For waterfalls lovers, we recommend visiting the Chamarel waterfall, as well as those of Rochester and the Savanne riviera. Interesting is also its dormant volcano.
Do not miss sites such as Grand Baie, Black River, Trou aux Biches, Pointe Eglise, Pointe aux Sables, Pointe des Pêcheurs, Flic en Flac and Poste Lafayette.
Fishing in Mauritius requires a fishing license. Remember that Fishing charters usually already have a collective fishing license so you don't need to buy one if you are hiring a Boat.
Depending on the Boat and the Duration of your Fishing trip, you will pay more or less for the trip. The Price for a 4 hours Fishing trip in Mauritius with a small Boat is 316€. A half day trip with a charter of about 40 feet costs about 470€, while an 8 hours Fishing trip will cost you between 700€ and 1200€. Of course, there are bigger Boats that are more expensive, but for that you also have more comfort.
The Price usually includes the Captain, fishing tackle, fuel, bait and lures and licenses. In each listing we indicate if drinks and food are Included. Some Fishing charters also offer pick-up (free of charge) and transportation to and from the hotel. If your accommodation is far from the Boat, there may be a surcharge for transportation.
Once the Booking is made, the Captain will contact you to arrange the meeting point and departure time. In addition, we recommend that you contact the Captain a couple of days before the excursion to confirm the weather forecast.
