Sama fishing
The sama (Dentex gibbosus) is a saltwater species distributed from Angola to Portugal, the Canary Islands and the warmer areas of the Mediterranean (southern Spain, Strait of Gibraltar, Morocco, southern Italy, Tunisia and Algeria). The largest specimens measure up to 1.2m and can weigh up to 18kg.
Adult males develop an important hump(gibbossus in Latin) on the head, typical of this species.
The sama is caught trolling or drifting with live bait. A squid or a live cuttlefish is usually irresistible. For bottom trolling it is essential to have a downrigger to be able to get close to the seabed.
Brightly colored artificial lures (yellow, pink, orange...) also produce good results with the downrigger. When drifting, a good weight is used to keep the bait open. Jigs and large vinyls with sinker heads can also be used to catch sama.
