Due to the sediments brought by the Rio Tinto, the Guadiana and the Guadalquivir, the bottoms of the Gulf of Cadiz are rather sandy and flat with the occasional rocky area. At 12 miles off the coast of Huelva there is only 50m depth!
Abundant schools of sardine, anchovy, horse mackerel and mackerel feed on the plankton present in these waters.
In shallower areas, species such as sea bass, sea bass and sea bream come in search of crustaceans, crabs and small fish. Around rocky areas there are also sama, amberjack and grouper. These Species can be found almost all year round and can be caught spinning or jigging with artificial lures or bait with the Boat drifting. Fishing with live bait, for example with squid or cuttlefish, is very successful for amberjack, largemouth bass and amberjack.
From April onwards, the waters start to warm up and the Atlantic currents bring big pelagics such as bluefin tuna, albacore, wahoo, dorado, white marlin and blue marlin. The best months are July, August and September.
Trolling offshore - from about 12 miles offshore - with all kinds of lures (Tunita, Rapala, Yo-Zuri, Magbay, Black Bart, Zacatak Lures, etc) you can catch big blue marlin, bluefin tuna and more than one shark that also attacks these lures.
Spring: at the beginning of spring, when the waters are still cold, you can do bottom fishing or light jigging in rocky areas to fish for bream, snapper, sama. With bait and bottom fishing you can also catch scorpionfish, pagel and all kinds of rockfish.
Starting from the beach or from the Boat in little water, using crab, tita, worm (Korean, etc) or sardine you can catch sea bream and sea bass.
With cuttlefish or live squid, you can catch large corvina, amberjack and amberjack.
On the high seas, in April, bluefin tuna start to appear and make their way to the Strait of Gibraltar. The best technique to hook one is spinning or trolling.
Summer: with the water getting warmer, there is more and more movement in the water. Seagulls can be seen chasing the huge schools of bait (sardine, anchovy, mackerel, horse mackerel...). Below are large predators such as bluefin tuna, albacore, dorado or llampuga, blue marlin and the king of the seas, the blue marlin. This is the time for deep sea trolling.
Autumn: in autumn, the water is still warm and it is still very good for deep sea trolling. Also coastal trolling is very interesting at this time: bonito, frigate tuna, horse mackerel, bluefish and Atlantic blue whiting among others are the species that are usually caught on the surface using small feathers and lures of about 8-15cm.
Winter: If the squalls allow it, winter is ideal for bottom fishing, coastal spinning and jigging. The most popular species at this time of year are bream, bream, snapper, scorpion fish, ...
