Fishing in the Gulf of Cadiz is of commercial interest for both industrial and sport fishing.
The Strait of Gibraltar is considered by many sport fishing enthusiasts as one of the best areas of the Iberian Peninsula. Its irregular bottoms are the preferred habitat of the Sama, Lemon Fish (Serviola), Denton, Grouper, Cherna, Voraz, etc.
It is also an obligatory passage for migratory marine species such as bluefin tuna. In the villages of Tarifa, Barbate and Sahara de los Atunes, for example, it is still fished in an artisanal way with the almadraba technique.
The Anglers prefer to catch it by trolling. In this area of the Gulf, the depths vary dramatically. Around the Strait of Gibraltar the bottom drops sharply. Shallows, ridges, rocks and sandy areas alternate constantly. The Camarinal sill, located next to the Majuan Bank, has a depth of 280 meters, while just outside the Bay of Algeciras there are depths of up to 1000 meters.
Other very interesting spots for Fishing are Punta Carnero, Guadalmesì, Oliveros point, the shallows of La Aceitera, the shallows of Los Cabezos in front of Punta Paloma, Bolonia, Isla Perejil, etc. You can practice coastal and bottom trolling, deep sea trolling for giant tuna, swordfish or marlin; you can also practice bottom fishing, jigging, spinning, etc.
In front of Cádiz and Huelva the seabed descends very gradually due to the sediments that have been deposited by the Guadalquivir, Tinto and Guadiana rivers during centuries and centuries. Fishing around their respective mouths is very interesting: the rivers attract a lot of small fish and in turn the predators that feed on this itch.
Sea bass, corvinas, sama, gilthead bream, etc are the most emblematic species. The Gulf of Cadiz is a real paradise for jigging.
There are plenty of pebbles and rocks populated with large predators. Fishing is best in depths of 30-50-80 meters; at greater depths it is also possible to fish, but the strong currents force us to use heavy jigs of 350 grams and 500 grams.
Spinning is also a very successful technique in this area. A lot of bonito, amberjack and bluefish are caught with big poppers and walkers.
The most famous area for big game fishing in the Gulf of Cadiz is called Los Picos Herminios. It is located 45 miles from Portimao, Portugal. Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Tuna, etc. are caught here. Compared to the Canary Islands or Cape Verde, it is said that there are less Blue Marlin here, but the ones caught are on average bigger.
The Blue Marlin season starts at the end of June when the waters start to warm up and lasts until October. White marlin stay until the end of November. Bluefin tuna show up around April and can be caught well into August.
