Faro is the ideal destination for deep-sea fishing. Here, the continental shelf is relatively narrow and you only have to sail about 5 miles to start fishing. Further out, 35 nautical miles from Faro, are the Herminios Peaks, a privileged area for fishing blue marlin, white marlin, swordfish, bigeye tuna, albacore, bluefin tuna and sharks such as blue shark, hammerhead shark, Mako...
The seabed rises from about 1000 meters deep to only 260 meters creating huge currents towards the surface concentrating a lot of fish. The shallows have a surface area of about 4 nautical miles.
You can also practice bottom fishing (chambel) or trolling. Fishing with bait (cuttlefish, squid, sardines, worms...) you can catch sea bream, sea bass, mackerel, conger eel, sole, etc. We can also be surprised by catches of sama, dentex, amberjack or croaker if we fish with live bait.
The marlin fishing season starts towards the end of June when the sea begins to warm up. Billfish stay until the end of October and white marlin stay until November. The best time to fish for bluefin tuna is from April to August. Other Species to catch in these Portuguese waters are albacore, dolphinfish, imperial marlin, bonito and amberjack. Fishing tournaments are organized every summer in ports such as Vilamoura, Albufeira, Portimão, Faro and Tavira.
Bottom fishing, jigging, spinning and bait fishing are available all year round.
Besides fishing in Faro you can also go cycling, kite surfing, surfing, horseback riding, local wine tasting, sailing, diving and much more.
Visit the old center of Faro with its cathedral, the Arco da Vila and the Muralhas, the pre-Roman walls that protected the city during the centuries of external attacks.
The Ria Formosa is a natural Booking inhabited by hundreds of bird species such as flamingos, herons, spoonbills, osprey, just to mention a few.
Enjoy the local gastronomy in the bars and restaurants of Faro and towns like Vilamoura, Tavira, Portimão, Albufeira & Sagres. Try the oysters from the Ria Formosa, the typical Caldeirada fish stew or simply grilled sea bass or sardines.
There are daily direct flights from all over Europe to Faro Airport.
Fishing in and around Faro requires a fishing license (Licença de Fishing Desportiva). Children under 14 years old do not need a fishing license, if accompanied by a guardian who has a valid fishing license. Remember that Fishing charters usually include the cost of the license in the Price of the Fishing trip. But there are others that charge it separately. The good news is that it does not usually cost more than 5€.
