Fishing in L'Ametlla de Mar is normally done between 20 and 40 miles from the coast. In these waters the sea bottom drops from 200 - 300 meters to 800 - 1000 meters deep, which makes it a perfect area for hunting large predators such as Bluefin Tuna, Swordfish, etc ....
From April onwards the tuna pass through the Strait of Gibraltar to spawn in the Mediterranean. Around this time the tuna begin to appear off the Catalan coast. At the beginning, small specimens of about 10-20 kg are usually caught, but little by little larger specimens of 50 kg to 80 kg are coming in. Tuna weighing 200kg, 300kg and even over 400kg are usually caught during the summer months on the "brumeo".
The surroundings of L'Ametlla de Mar and L'Hospitalet de l'Infant are very interesting for jigging. It is a technique, currently very fashionable, which is fished vertically with spoons from 50 grams to 250 grams. In our database we have the coordinates of hundreds of rocks and wrecks that are real fish magnets. Jigging we can catch - depending on the depths - Dentex, Amberjack, Amberjack, Permit, Bonitos, Doritos, Sea Bass, Mackerel, etc.
The delta area is particularly interesting for spinning and popping. The leerfish and bluefish ("tallahams") that hunt on the surface are easily seduced by poppers.
For those who don't want to spend a whole day at sea or those who don't want to be so far from the coast, we suggest trolling from the coast. In general we do a light trolling with small lures to catch mackerel, horse mackerel, bonito, and spit among others. But we can also rig bigger lures or natural bait (Cuttlefish, Octopus or Spit) to seduce the leerfish and bluefish during the months of July, August and September.
You can also choose to do a "curri" on the bottom, exploring the rocky and poseidonia areas where the giant Dentex, Amberjack and others hide.
Diving in L'Ametlla de Mar is practiced mainly during the summer months. With the Boat drifting, sardines are baited continuously to attract prey. Depending on the area and the fishing equipment, you can catch mackerel and bonito and of course bluefin tuna (giant tuna).
Fishing for giant tuna in l'Ametlla de Mar deserves a separate section. Only 2 miles from the port harbor, you will find the bluefin tuna cages. Wild tuna caught in spring are fattened until they have an ideal percentage of fat. They are then slaughtered to serve the Japanese, American and European markets.
Every day of the year, professional Anglers from the Balfegó company fatten these tuna with about 35 tons of mackerel or sardines. Evidently, there is a part of the food that goes through the nets of the cages, attracting all kinds of fish. Among others, there is a population of wild tuna that lives around these cages all year round. Fishing for bluefin tuna is extremely fruitful in this area. Drifts are made by passing as close as possible to the cages, baiting sardines or lakes. The tuna caught with a rod in l'Ametlla de Mar weigh between 60kg and 250kg, although tuna weighing up to 400kg have been caught. And all this just 10 minutes sailing from the port of l'Ametlla, so you don't have to go far to catch the bluefin tuna of your dreams!
There are a great number of species that can be fished in L'Ametlla de Mar, although much depends on the time of the year, depth, area, type of fishing, bait, etc...
Fish that can be caught throughout the year are bluefish ("Tallahams"), leerfish, amberjack, amberjack, sea bass, grouper, horse mackerel, ...
Blue fish usually appear from April onwards and visit our coasts until October. This does not mean that they disappear afterwards; there are always some that prefer to stay. Bluefin tuna, frigate tuna, frigate tuna, tuna, bonito, mackerel, etc ... are all more or less common species in the Mediterranean.
With bottom fishing you can catch Conger eel, Forkbeard, Sea bream, Hake, etc. Other rarer fish are the Swordfish and the Imperial Needlefish.
Salou, Port Aventura, Ferrari Land, Caribe Aquatic Park, the Ebro Delta with its flamingos, wine tasting in the Penedés & Terra Alta, mountain bike trips, watching an FC Barcelona game at Camp Nou.
