Seeing the orography of the island, we can intuit that the seabed around Lanzarote is very irregular, being the ideal fishing area in Lanzarote for Medregal and Grouper. Fishing lovers do not have to go far from the coast to find great depths. In fact, they usually start trolling for Marlin by leaving from the harbor. Less than a mile from Puerto Calero, for example, there are already 400 meters deep. Further out, the depths exceed 1000 meters and in the west of the island they go down to 3700 meters!
In the north of the island we can find the Chinijo archipelago, composed of the islets of Alegranza, La Graciosa, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste. To the south is the island of Fuerteventura. Its privileged geographical location, its subtropical climate and ocean currents make Fishing in Lanzarote is rich in Species and has abundant marine life in its waters.
There are a large number of sedentary Species, but it is also a passing area for many migratory fish. Whether you practice spinning, jigging, inshore trolling, bottom fishing or deep sea fishing, the possibilities offered by fishing in Lanzarote are immense... and the chances of catching the fish of your life as well.
Jigging in Lanzarote
The rocky bottoms with some sandy areas are a real luxury for jigging fans. Wherever you go, there are pebbles, rocks and wrecks that are a real oasis for jigging. During the whole Season you can practice this vertical Fishing and you can catch Bonitos, Sierras, groupers, wahoo, wahoo, amberjacks, barracudas, samas, dentex, etc. For Fishing in Lanzarote in this area you must be able to count on a good Fishing charter and a good Guide who knows the area and has his marks. It is important to know the tides and currents, you have to know where to drop the jig, what time of the day, what kind of jig to use, etc... Otherwise, the chances of catching something are greatly reduced.
Light trolling in Lanzarote
Fishing light trolling with 20 - 30 pound rigs and small lures you can spend unforgettable fishing sessions in Lanzarote. Depending on the season you can catch different species such as sierra, snapper, wahoo, bonito, barracuda (barracuda), sama, amberjack, bluefish, tuna (red and yellowfin tuna), dorado (llampuga), etc...
Big Game Fishing in Lanzarote
Lanzarote is an ideal place to practice Deep Sea Fishing since, as we have indicated before, there are important depths at a short distance from the coasts. This means that, as soon as you leave the port, you can start fishing. The Blue Marlin, king of deep-sea fishing, the White Marlin, the Dorado (Llampuga) and different types of tropical Tuna visit the waters of Lanzarote from June to the end of October. Bluefin Tuna come to the islands in autumn and winter. Fishing with natural bait you can also catch hammerhead sharks.
Fishing seasons in Lanzarote are similar to fishing seasons in Fuerteventura.
Autumn and winter: Anchored or drifting the best technique for fishing in Lanzarote during autumn and winter is bottom fishing. Fishing with natural bait we fish for all types of rockfish, Raya Grande and in mid-water, the Sierra (the Canarian name for Atlantic Bonito, in Latin Sarda Sarda). With live bait (Mackerel, Choco or Squid for example) you can fish for Amberjack (Serviola), Sama or Serviola.
In winter and early spring, we usually have the passage of Bluefin Tuna, Big Eye Tuna and Albacore. They are fished by trolling with big bonito lures or with natural bait. You can also practice Tuna Fishing in Lanzarote by drift fishing with natural bait.
Spring and summer: Fishing in Lanzarote in spring and summer is very interesting because from spring onwards a warmer water current arrives from the south to the Canary Islands. This current first reaches La Gomera and then meets the other islands of the archipelago. This current manages to attract abundant nutrients for small fish such as mackerel, sardines, sardines, sardines, etc., being these small species the preferred food of wahoo, albacore, skipjack tuna, bonito, white marlin and, above all, blue marlin. The "picudos" visit the island from the beginning of July until November, although the best months for Marlin Fishing in Lanzarote are the months of September and October.
Fishing in Lanzarote during this time of the year is characterized by the large number of Boats practicing trolling: at a speed of about 6 - 8 knots all kinds of artificial lures such as Octopus or Squid made of rubber or feather are dragged. Fishing is done on the surface and the lures usually come out of the water, creating a bubble trail that attracts predators even more. The vast majority of Anglers practice responsible fishing: once they have enjoyed the fight with an animal that can weigh more than 1000 pounds (almost 500 kg), it is released again safe and sound.
GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Fishing in Lanzarote is a fishing area very close to Fuerteventura. The island of Lanzarote is about 62 km high and 21 km wide (making an area of 805 km 2), it is not one of the largest in the Canaries. It must be taken into account that it is a volcanic terrain. The highest points of the island are: Las Peñas del Chache (670 m), north of Lanzarote, and the Atalaya (608 m). The island has 249 km of coastline (the north and west coasts are steep, while the east and south coasts are low and sandy).
The municipalities of Lanzarote are: Arrecife (the capital), Teguise, Haría, San Bartolomé, Tías, Tinajo and Yaiza. Arrecife is the largest city on the island and half of the island's population is concentrated there.
The natural resources of Lanzarote are high and this makes this island an idyllic place to enjoy contact with nature and a wide range of possibilities and activities to do.
METEOROLOGY
Fishing in Lanzarote has a very attractive climate as it is subtropical in terms of temperature and dry or subdesert in terms of rainfall. Temperatures experience little variation both between the different seasons and between day and night, thanks to the moderating action of the ocean. The average temperature of the coldest month (January), at sea level, is 17 °C and the average temperature of the warmest month (August) is 24 °C. Temperatures are usually quite warm, between 14 and 29°C in summer.
The average annual rainfall is about 250 mm, concentrated in the winter months and practically nil between May and October. Rainfall varies from 250 mm to 50 mm depending on the area. During Fishing in Lanzarote you can almost always find winds (the trade winds) that come from the Sahara and drag a lot of dust. These winds do not prevent fishing in Lanzarote from being attractive for the most experienced Anglers.
A fishing license is required for sport fishing. Remember that Fishing charters usually already have a collective fishing license so you don't need to buy one if you are hiring a Boat.
The Fishing license can be processed and obtained directly online, on the official website of the Government of the Canary Islands.
Depending on the Boat and the Duration of your Fishing trip, you will pay more or less for the trip. The Price for a 4 hours Fishing trip in Lanzarote on a shared Boat is 85€ per person (from 09h to 13h).
A half day trip (4 hours) with a private charter is 450€ in Orzola and 695€ in Puerto Calero, while an 8 hours Fishing trip will cost you about 1100€.
The Price usually includes the Captain, fishing equipment, fuel, bait and lures, drinks and licenses. A small sandwich is usually offered as well. If you want, you can bring your own food as well.
Fishing charters also offer pick-up (free of charge) and transportation to and from the hotel. This shuttle service is only for hotels and houses near the port from where you depart.
Once the Booking is made, the Captain will contact you to arrange the meeting point and departure time. In addition, we recommend that you contact the Captain a couple of days before the excursion to confirm the weather forecast.
