Anjova fishing

The bluefish(Pomatomus saltatrix) is a very popular species among fishing enthusiasts because of its aggressiveness, strength and speed, and during the fight it often makes several spectacular jumps to try to get rid of the hook.

Distributed around the world, they usually move in small groups in coastal waters of temperate and subtropical seas and can measure more than one meter and weigh more than 10 kg.

They are aggressive fish that feed on jack mackerel, mackerel, mullet, sardine and squid for example. They have extremely strong jaws with very sharp teeth. They are fished with artificial lures or natural bait by trolling or spinning with jigs, poppers, minnows and walkers.

Many Anglers use 100mm or larger steel or nylon bass to prevent the fish from cutting the line with their sharp teeth during the fight.

How to fish Anjova

The bluefish is fished by trolling, bottom spinning, and fly fishing. They are usually found in coastal waters, mouths and harbors. You don't have to get up early to catch bluefish, it is a fish that is usually active in broad daylight.

Spinning bluefish Fishing

The most fun way to catch bluefish is spinning. Using 25lb to 40lb taut lines, jigs, poppers, walkers and minnows are usually cast. It works well to pick up lures at varying speeds: fast, stop dry, follow slowly with dry jerks. When a bluefish is sighted following the lure, don't stop retrieving and if you can, speed it up!

Trolling for bluefish

The bluefish also attacks artificial lures such as Rapala, Yo Zuri, etc. Their teeth will leave the lures well marked. It is best to go at a speed of about 4 knots.

With natural bait, you can go a little slower, especially if you use live bait. The bait par excellence is the spit, which is rigged with a steel line to prevent the predator from breaking your line. It is not surprising that in Catalan it is called Tallahams, which means 'hook cutter'.

A live jack mackerel or mackerel is usually an irresistible bait and can be fished trolling, going very slowly, or simply drifting.

Can you eat Anjova?

Bluefish can be eaten, but it is not considered a delicacy. It is an oily fish so it has a high Omega-3 value, but it also tends to have high levels of mercury. The bluefish is usually caught and then released in perfect condition.

Regulations for fishing Anjova
