Spinning fishing in the Cap de Creus Natural Park
Portbou, Costa Brava
Nature plays a major role in the province of Girona: the Natural Park of Cap de Creus, the Natural Park of Els Aiguamolls de l'Empordà and the Natural Park of El Montgrí, the Medes Islands and the Baix Ter are three sceneries of enormous diversity. The same is true of its coasts and the fauna of the Costa Brava's sea. The amount of underwater life in the waters of Palafrugell, Cadaqués Blanes, Palamós, Sant Feliu de Guixols, Tossa or Calella is simply amazing.
The waters of the province of Girona are home to many species of fish, sea turtles and cetaceans. These are our 5 favorite species for Fishing in Girona.
The common Dentex dentex (Dentex dentex) can reach 100cm in its adult stage, weighing approximately 14 kg. Its name comes from its teeth: it has four strong fangs with which it devours its prey (although it is not dangerous for humans). It basically feeds on fish, crabs, mollusks and, its favorite, squid.
The dentex is fished in Girona by trolling with natural bait or jigging. It can be fished practically all year round, although spring is usually a very good time for fishing in Girona for this species.
The Serinola Dumerili or also known by other names such as lemon fish, crowned amberjack, crown of law or milt can reach 160 cm and weigh 60 kg. This fish can be fished all year round and goes very well with natural bait such as mackerel, squid or live cuttlefish. Amberjack is one of the most desired catches for jigging enthusiasts and is usually fished with large long jigs close to crags and wrecks that are found at considerable depths.
The Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus Thynnus) can weigh up to 450 kilograms, which makes it one of the most prized species by Anglers when fishing in Girona. It can be fished by trolling from April to August, although it can also be fished by bait fishing in July and August. It can be found offshore.
In March and April there are usually large schools of bluefin tuna near the coast. They form large schools that eat on the surface. During these spring months you can spin fishing in Girona using walkers, stickbait and jigs. The ports of Blanes, Palamós, Estartit and Lllancà already have a reputation for spinning tuna fishing in Girona.
Bream can weigh more than 6 kilos and can measure between 25 and 60 cm. Bream are fished in deep waters (200 - 400m deep). This species is fished in Girona in winter with natural bait (cuttlefish, squid, shrimp...).
The leerfish can reach more than 1,6m and weigh more than 25kg. It feeds basically on fish such as sardines or anchovies, alachas, marlin or mullets. It hunts them on the edge of the rocks, near beaches and harbors. It is fished in Girona by trolling or spinning with walkers, rangers, poppers and vinyls. You don't have to fish far away: areas of 7 and 15 meters deep are ideal.
Fishing in Girona in spring is very popular for coastal trolling. From April, May you can start trolling and jigging to fish for species such as bluefin tuna, albacore or Atlantic cod. Spring is also a good time for fishing with espets or needles to catch leerfish or bluefish in 7m - 15m depth.
Fishing in Costa Brava in summer is a good time to fish for bluefin tuna in brumeo. This Fishing can be done offshore in the area of Cap de Creus, Blanes or Palamos. Closer to the coast you can do bottom trolling with natural bait (squid, mackerel or horse mackerel) for fishing in Costa Brava on dentex or amberjack.
Fishing in Costa Brava in autumn is an excellent time for inshore trolling with small lures and sinkers to catch bonito, mackerel, frigate mackerel, mackerel, Atlantic horse mackerel, dolphinfish (among others). It is also a good time for fishing with espets or needles to catch leerfish or bluefish in 7m - 15m depth. September and October are very good months for light trolling. Bonitos and dolphinfish are fished in water depths of 40 - 80 meters, with feathers, Rapala, Yozuri, Halco, and other small lures. They are also worth fishing with light tackle as they usually offer a good fight.
The best fishing in Girona in winter is bottom fishing and bottom fishing. On the deep sea we can find big bream, forkbeard, conger eel, wreckfish, grouper or hake. The sunken Boats and rocks are the hot spots for bottom fishing and the Anglers will not easily reveal where to find them. Fishing with this technique is used to catch pagel, snapper, serrano, bream, grunt, forkbeard, conger eel, among others. The best baits are sardine, squid, octopus, etc.
Apart from fishing in Girona, you can also enjoy the area by cycling or mountain biking, wine tasting in the nearby wineries, snorkeling or diving, sailing or windsurfing and kite surfing in Sant Angler and Blanes, walking and hiking, and much more.
Discover the local customs and food in the hundreds of bars and restaurants in the area.
