The coastal region of the province of Malaga is popularly known as Costa del Sol. It is one of the most important tourist areas in Spain, concentrating around 35% of the tourism in Andalusia and hosting more than 17 million overnight stays per year.
Starting from Nerja, on the eastern border of the province of Malaga, to Manilva, on the western border, is what covers the Costa del Sol thus occupying more than 160 kilometers of coastline, perfect for marinas for fishing in Malaga, moorings (almost 4,500) and Fishing. The waters of Marbella are one of the most interesting fishing panoramas on the Costa del Sol and probably in the Mediterranean.
TOP SPECIES
Sama: The Sama roquera (Pagrus auriga) is usually quite large (90 centimeters) and can weigh 11 kilograms or more. The color of its scales is usually pink at the time of capture and then more reddish.
It lives in the seabed near the Costa del Sol between 2 and 200 meters deep in rocky or mixed sandy and rocky areas. Fishing in Malaga for this species is practiced trolling with natural bait. It can be fished practically all year round, although February and March are usually the best months to catch this species.
Dentex: The common Dentex (Dentex dentex) is a species of fish from the sparidae family and is named for its large teeth. It is also called rozon or sama, but it is mostly known as dentex dentex. It can reach a length of about 100 cm in its adult stage, weighing approximately 14 kg. The scales acquire a greenish-gray color if young or reddish with bluish spots in adults (sometimes with a dark transverse band). It has only one dorsal fin that can hide. But the most remarkable, as we have already said, are its teeth: it has four strong fangs with which it devours its prey (although it is not dangerous for humans). It basically feeds on fish, crabs, mollusks and, its favorite, squid.
We can find it between 0 and 200 meters deep, depending on whether it is young or adult we will find it in the first case closer to the shore and in the second case deeper. When fishing in Malaga for this species, we can use the bottom trolling technique with natural bait to catch it.
Fishing in Malaga you can fish practically all year long trolling at the bottom or at anchor with natural bait. April and May are usually very good months for Fishing in Malaga for this species.
Bluefin Tuna: The Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus Thynnus) or also known as Bluefin Tuna, is a fish of the Scombridae family. It is a species that can weigh more than 500 kilograms, which makes it one of the most prized species by Anglers. It can be fished with the trolling technique from April to August, although it can also be fished with brumeo in July and August.
A very spectacular alternative to catch tuna weighing between 20 and 100 kilograms is spinning. Fishing in Malaga for this technique it is best to use walkers, stickbait and fairly large jigs that are picked up irregularly, sometimes with dry jerks, stops and quick retrieves. It is advisable to use a good reel (such as Saltiga 4500 or 6500 from Daiwa or Stella 18000 - 20000 from Shimano, for example), braided lines of 60lb - 80lb because the fight with a bluefin tuna can easily last for more than an hour.
The most known place worldwide and recommended for local people is without any doubt the Strait of Gibraltar as it is the obligatory passage during the Tuna migration.
Grouper: The grouper belongs to the subfamily Epinephelinae. Its strong body is characterized by large eyes and a prominent jaw. They usually inhabit the rocky areas of the Costa del Sol. The largest we can find are 1 meter long and can weigh more than 40 kilograms. Its brown color has white spots, but we must take into account that variations can occur depending on the situation in which it is found (depending on the luminosity).
This fish is perfectly adapted to the seabed of the Costa del Sol, so the technique to fish it will be trolling or anchored with natural bait. Fishing in Malaga we can find this species all year round.
Sea bream: The common sea bream is also known as red sea bream, Bogarrabella, voracious or Bogazo. Also pancho or panchito (when young). Its shape is oval and its sides are flattened. The head has a rounded shape with a reddish back and silver sides. Its fins are pink and it has black spots in the axils of its pectoral fins. It weighs more than 6 kg and measures between 25 and 60 cm. Bream are fished in deep water (200 - 400m deep). Juveniles are more coastal, shallow water and swim in large schools. They live in small schools of fish and as they get older they are found in deeper and sandier places.
In the Costa del Sol the sea bream is fished in deep waters (200 - 400 meters deep) especially during the winter months.
Spring: Fishing in Malaga in spring is from April, May. At this time you can start trolling and spinning for Bluefin Tuna and Albacore. Spring is also good for Fishing in Malaga drifting or anchored with live bait to catch Dentex, Grouper, Tuna.
Summer: Fishing in Malaga in summer is a good time to fish for Bluefin Tuna. This Fishing can be done offshore 30 miles from the coast. In the Strait of Gibraltar Bluefin Tuna is fished by trolling with artificial baits since the currents do not allow bait fishing. Closer to the coast you can do bottom trolling with natural bait (Squid, Mackerel or Horse Mackerel) to catch Dentex, Sama, Grouper or Amberjack.
Autumn: Fishing in Malaga in autumn is considered an excellent time for coastal trolling with small lures and sinkers to catch various Species such as Bonito, Mackerel, Melva, Bacoreta and Dolphinfish, among others.
Winter: Fishing in Malaga in winter is usually an ideal time for deep sea fishing and bottom fishing. If we opt for deep sea fishing in Malaga we can find a wide range of species. Some examples are the big sea bream, forkbeard, conger eel, Cherna, grouper and hake. February and March are usually very good months for fishing big Sama (Capiton) trolling with natural bait. Grouper, Dentex and Amberjack can also be caught with this technique.
All year round: Fishing in Malaga at any time of the year we can do bottom fishing.
