Sea Fishing in Majorca - Find and Book your Charter

Fishing in Mallorca means bottom fishing, spinning, trolling, jigging and tuna fishing. All year round you can target smaller species like scorpion fish, jack, snapper, sea bream while bottom fishing. Amberjack & dentex are great predators that can be caught jigging inchiku and other jigs over the reefs. In September & October dolphinfish and smaller tuna species like bonito, melva, jack, false albacore come to the Island to feed on sardines & anchovies. However, Mallorca's specialty is big game tuna fishing. From May to mid August, you can go off shore trolling for albacore, bluefin tuna and spearfish. The Balearic Islands and more precisely the area between Ibiza and Formentera is the most important spawning area for the bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean Sea. The waters off Alcudia, in the north of Mallorca, host a massive population of bluefin tuna that live there all year round. Alcudia is definitely the hot spot for big game fishing for giant bluefin tuna.

Seasons

Spring: in May the tunas arrive to the Balearic Islands to spawn between Ibiza and Formentera. Trolling off shore you can target albacore from May until early August. This is also the best time for big game fishing in Mallorca: bluefin tuna up to 350kg+ can be caught drifting. Angler chum sardines, mackerel and jack to attract the enormous pelagic fish. Not many people know that the waters off northern Mallorca (Alcudia) hold a huge population of bluefin tuna that don't migrate to the Strait of Gibraltar and the Atlantic Ocean; they stay all year round. This means that - if the winds allow you - you can catch a bluefin tuna during Christmas!

Summer: In June shoals of tuna move to places called the "S" and "Tower" located in the southern part of Mallorca. In June and July the albacore move to "Ses Mamelles". Here in Summer, you can fish mainly by chumming to target bluefin tuna. Good areas for chumming are Alcudia, the areas north of Ibiza and Formentera, and the area located to the east of Porto Colom and Porto Cristo.

Autumn: when autumn comes to Mallorca anglers often practice spinning and light trolling targeting smaller tuna species like melva, bonito, false albacore and dolphinfish (1-10kg). Normally we target these species trolling lures about 4-5 miles off the coast.

Winter: Bottom fishing in Mallorca can be done all year round, especially during the winter months. This fishing technique, produces a wide variety of species such as Caproig or red scorpion fish, black spot sea bream, conger eel and forkbeard among others. Locals also go squid fishing during the colder months.

Top Species for Sport Fishing in Mallorca

Caproig (scorpionfish): They feed on small fish and crustaceans and shed their skins every two weeks. It's a beautiful fish highly desired by the fishermen of the Balearic Islands, and they can be targeted in Mallorca most of the year with worms, sardines or squids.

Dolphinfish: The adult male and female dolphinfish are distinguished by their different fronts. The male one is sharper whereas the female is more rounded. The best months for fishing them in Mallorca are September and October. This is a voracious species, caught mainly by trolling with small lures and feathers. They are good fighters who can jump during combat.

Bluefin Tuna: Mallorca and the Balearic Islands are one of the most important spawning grounds for this "king of the seas." Although the best time to catch tuna is in the summer when the waters are warm, bluefin tuna can be caught throughout the year in the waters off Alcudia. Here in Mallorca, you don't see many tuna frenzies as they prefer to feed on mackerel and jack a few meters under the surface. Spinning with large poppers & stick bait isn't the best way to fish for bluefin tuna in Mallorca.

Albacore: The albacore often live in deep sea. Albacore is a valuable food and is also appreciated by sport fishermen. Between May and August, you can fish them in Mallorca by trolling.

Swordfish: The swordfish is a migratory predator that is characterized by its long, flat bill (like a sword). At the adult stage, they lose all their teeth and scales. The winter months are the best time to fish for swordfish, although it is an uncommon fish and fishing it is not easy.
